THE SIX HABITS OF HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL WEBMASTERS
It is very
important that you read this section and not skip
forward. Once you understand the STEPS FOR SUCCESS, you
will apply these steps to the "secrets" I will share
with you in the next section.
- Plan
your life. When a couple decides to get married,
they plan their wedding. When you go on vacation,
you plan your trip. So if you take the time to plan
such "important" events in your life, why would
you live your life day to day without a plan for success?
Here's one for you:
Let's say you and I both decided to drive to Florida from
Chicago. I plan my trip, get a map and map out my
route to Florida. However you don't believe in
making plans. If we both leave at the same time, I
would get to Florida (the end goal) before you
would. You would eventually get there by
driving southeast (the general direction to Florida from
Chicago), however you would make wrong turns (mistakes)
along the way, get frustrated, and waste time and money.
This example holds true for those that plan for success,
and those that don't plan but know they would like to
become successful "some day".
Take 15 minutes each night to plan out your tasks and
goals for the next day.
Know the difference between a task list and a goal
list. Knowing the difference will prevent you from
overloading yourself and getting frustrated or giving
up. A goal is made up of multiple tasks that must be
completed in order to accomplish the goal.
Before I fully understood the difference, I would create
daily task lists, but would list goals down on my
task list, instead of tasks. At the end of the day,
I would be able to check off one item from my list
and would get frustrated for not being able to accomplish
all of the items on my list. I finally realized that
the items on my list were not tasks, but actually goals
that were made up of multiple tasks that needed to be
completed before I could check off the item on my
list. So even though my list only had 5 items
(goals) to complete, 50 tasks would have to be completed
before all items could be checked off. This
explained why I could never complete my daily task
lists! Once I understood the difference between
goals and tasks, I was able to better plan my day and not
overload my schedule. This resulted in a more
positive attitude and increased productivity. After
all, you can only complete so much work in a given day.
To plan your day, week, month, and life, I suggest that
you use an electronic planner such as a palm pilot or a
handheld pc. Why? Because the information can
be synchronized easily with your computer, and that means
that you can take your information with you everywhere you
go.
- Set
deadlines and block out time for your tasks and
goals. There are only 24 hours in a day, and of
those 24 hours, only so many hours can be used to
work. How do you use your time?
This is how I use my time:
8 hours - sleep
1 hour - wake up & exercise
1 hour - shower, get dressed, have breakfast
1 hour - lunch
1 hour - dinner
5 hours - quality time with family
TOTAL = 17 HOURS
This leaves me 7 hours to accomplish my tasks for the
day. (Less if I have appointments or have plans to
go out with friends in the evening.)
For each task I have to accomplish, I block out the
appropriate amount of time to accomplish that task and
don't allow for any interruptions. If I only have
enough work time to accomplish 5 tasks, then so be it...
that is all the tasks I will schedule for the day. I
just make sure that I accomplish those tasks in the time allotted.
When I say "don't allow for interruptions" I
mean it! Tell anyone that calls that you are in a
meeting and will return their call later. They don't
need to know that you are in a "meeting" with
yourself. Block out time to make your phone calls
and answer your email.
Most people get "caught up" answering phone
calls, answering emails, or dealing with unscheduled
events, then find that they don't have the time to
accomplish their scheduled tasks.
- You are a
direct reflection of the people you surround yourself
with, so surround yourself with smart, successful people.
I
only hired those that I felt were better or had the
potential to be a better leader than I was. By
surrounding myself with great people, my standards were
raised.
Surround yourself with lesser people, and you lower your
standards.
When I was younger, my best friend's father, a very
successful man, gave my best friend and I the following
advice:
"Boys, I want you to hang out with the smart
kids. Because when you hang out with smart kids, you
tend to act smart. If you hang out with dumb kids,
you tend to do dumb things."
- Concentrate
on your circle of influence, not on your circle of
concern. Everyone has a circle of influence, and a
circle of concern.
In my circle of influence are things that I have influence
over, such as:
- my attitude
- ethics
- how I treat my family
- my health
- how I react to good and bad news
- how I spend my time
- whether or not I plan my day
- how much money I invest in the stock market
In my circle of concern are things that I am concerned
about, but have no influence over, such as:
- the weather
- earthquakes
- volcanoes erupting
- the stock market
Too many people concentrate on things they have no
influence over. Do you?
How do you know if something is within your circle of
influence or circle of concern?
If what you say or do will change the outcome, then it is
within your circle of influence.
When the company I worked for restructured and
closed my office.... nothing I could say or do would
change the fact that the company had eliminated
my position. Therefore, my executive position
was no longer within my circle of influence and had moved
to my circle of concern.
Because I knew that in order to succeed I had to
concentrate on my circle of influence, I was able to
successfully launch multiple internet businesses and am
now in a position to help you succeed.
- Model
successful people or successful businesses to attain
similar results. By modeling successful people or
businesses, you can accelerate your success by avoiding
the mistakes made by the people or businesses that
failed. For example, if you model the most
successful stockbroker or fund manager and invest in the same companies he invests in and sell
when he sells, you would experience similar results.
If you want to have the physique of a body builder, all
you would have to do is model what the body builder does
to get the results you desire. Eat the same foods,
work out the same number of hours with the same level of
intensity, sleep the same hours, and over time, you will
have the physique of a bodybuilder.
If you would like to model my success, that's easy because

- Take
action! This has got to be the most difficult
"habit" of all. If taking action were
easy, you would already be wealthy, healthy, and wise.
The ability to take action is what separates the
successful people from the rest of the world.
Have you ever told yourself one of the following
statements?
* I'm going to lose weight by eating right and start
exercising on a daily basis.
* I'm going to quit smoking.
* I'm going to start my own business.
* I'm going back to school to earn my diploma or degree.
* I'm going to do this, I'm going to do that... blah blah
blah.
So what's stopping you? No one is preventing you
from losing weight, exercising, and eating right. No
one is preventing you from quitting smoking. No one
is preventing you from starting your own business.
No one is preventing you from going back to school.
If no one is stopping you, then what's the problem?
YOUR INABILITY TO TAKE ACTION IS THE PROBLEM!
By failing to take action, you are preventing yourself
from attaining everything you want in life.
I can
talk all day about fishing, but no matter how much I talk
I'll never catch a fish by talking about it. In
order to catch a fish, I have to take action by baiting a
hook and casting my line into the lake.
I can talk all day about getting exercise and walking on
my treadmill, but no matter how much I talk I won't get
any exercise by talking about walking on my
treadmill. I have to take action by getting on the
treadmill and actually walking.
Do you want to live the rest of your life talking
about being successful and never achieving success, or

QUESTION:

will she get?
ANSWER:

Therefore, certain actions will always produce certain

However, if I ask you to bring water to a boil, then place
an egg in the boiling water for 3 minutes, what will you
get?

A soft boiled egg.

your actions.
